THE PHARMA REVIEW APRIL 06
Appropriate Labeling Improving Rational Practice
Vijay Roy, Rani Varsha

Abstract: Health claims authorized by the Food and Drug Administration are one of several ways labels can win the attention of health-conscious consumers. Labeling instructions are recommended to convey important data regarding drug administration and also enhances the advice of prescribers. The decisions to append such information are based on the potential clinical significance for the benefit of patients.

Medicines are safe and effective when used under a doctor's care. Next to the medicine itself, understanding the drug label is the most important part of self-care with medicines. The best way to become better informed is to read and understand the information on labels. Reading the drug label is the most important part of taking care of yourself or your family when using medicines. This is especially true because you probably take your medicines without seeing the label. The medicine label should contain important easy-to-read, usage and safety information.

Label information for prescribed medicines should be considered to supplement and reinforce oral communication between the patient and healthcare provider. Labeling designates all labels and other written or printed or graphic matter upon an immediate container of an article, or upon, or in any package or wrapper in which it is enclosed, except any outer shipping container. The label should be concise, uncomplicated and foolproof.
