Are the Practicals Evaluated
Correctly?

Abstract: The practicals in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are given the equal importance as that of theory examinations in pharmaceutical education. The practical examination comprises of various components such as Synopsis, Viva voce, major and minor experiments. Is the pattern of the practical examinations similar for all subjects? The practical examinations vary within different subjects of the same university and there is a wide variation between various universities. The practical part is also evaluated as per the outcome of experimental results. Are we evaluating the practicals correctly? This question is the need of the hour. There is a wide acceptance that the experimental skills such as handling the instruments, methodologies, planning etc. are not being considered for the evaluation. The vital components are not considered and the evaluation system encourages mainly the memory skills. The practical evaluation should comprise of the technical skills, planning and problem solving approaches to facilitate knowledge based learning.
