Collaborative Health Care
through Doctors and Pharmacists

Abstract:
Health is perhaps the most important human resource. Without it, the
quality of life, whatever one's situation, is diminished and one's capacity
to provide for one's self or family and to contribute to the making of the
better world is limited. In sum, health is essential to human potential,
both individual and societal. It is the fundamental right of the individual.
Inherent to right to health is the right to heath care. Health care not only
needs to be appropriate and adequate but also should be accessible and
affordable. Health care consists of these three important constituents
beside other supporting services: Medical care, pharmaceutical care and
nursing care. As such the quality of service would not be possible to be
provided by one group of health care professionals. The health team concept
becomes apparent. The doctors, pharmacists and nurses form the core of
health care team. The health team concept has taken a firm root in the
delivery of health services both in developing and developed world. While
the functions of nurses and doctors are well recognized, the role of
pharmacists in health care is under utilized. The present article discusses
the role of pharmacist in health care delivery system, compares the global
scenario with that of prevailing situation in our country and outlines an
approach for collaborative health care to improve health care delivery
