Responsible Self-Medication
R.K. Rishi Abstract:
Everybody makes constant efforts to remain healthy and drugs play a vital
role in that. Most of us believe in self health care and understand that
some remedial measures can be taken if some disease or disorder occurs. Self
health care is an effort to stay fit and maintain good physical and mental
health, prevent illness and accidents, care for minor ailments and long-term
conditions, and maintain health during and after an illness. According to
WHO guidelines, "Self care can be defined as the primary public health
resource in the health care system. It consists of the health activities and
health related decision making of individuals, families, friends, colleagues
at work, and so on. It includes self-medication, non-drug self-treatment,
social support in illness, and first aid in everyday life" (Guidelines for
the Regulatory Assessment of Medicinal Products for use in Self-Medication.
2000). The Mashelkar Committee Report submitted to the Ministry of Health in
November 2003 highlighted that, "there is a need to improve the access to
household medicines and products to large masses in the interest of
preventive health". The above content is an abstract only. For the full Article please contact: |
