Surendra Nath Biswas - An
Enlightened Chemist and Druggist

Singh Abstract: Surendra Nath
Biswas, a Calcutta based chemist and druggist, was a well-read and
well-informed professional. He was the proprietor of M/s C. C. Biswas &
Sons. As it comes out from some of his writings, he possibly entered
druggist business in 1908.1,2 He may have started as a compounder, since
while answering to a critic he once stated, 'I feel proud to call myself a
compounder, because I have earned my bread in this profession.'3 It has not
been possible to obtain biographical material on him.4Biswas wrote effectively on different aspects of professional pharmacy. He also engaged in delivering talks for spreading awareness about better professionalism. His articles which have become available from 1939 onwards show that he was a very knowledgeable person. In support of his views he used to draw attention to the position as it existed in the western world with regard to the pharmacy profession.
