Andrographis paniculata King of Bitters-A Review

Abstract:
Andrographis paniculata (Nees) commonly as King of bitters, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, consists of 250 genera and 2500 species. Andrographis itself occupies 28 species of small annual herbs.1-3

It has been successfully used medicinally in various Asian cultures including India and is a part of Unani, Ayurvedic and Chinese systems of medicine. It is also widely found in Scandinavian culture to treat and prevent common cold. It has been found to possess "cold property" and hence it lowers body temperature and expel toxins out of body.1,4 A. paniculata is a widely used Chinese drug.5

Kalmegh is known since long for its hepatoprotective action, but the present article emphasizes its importance as antidiabetic, anticancer agent as well as for its immunostimulatory activity. It also deals with the pharmacognostic, clinical and therapeutic significance of A. paniculata.
