Abstract: A simple and sensitive spectrophotometric
method has been developed for determination of
cefadroxil in bulk powder and its pharmaceutical dosage
forms. The proposed method was based on reaction of
primary amine group of cefadroxil and acetyl
acetone-formaldehyde reagent, which gives a yellow
coloured chromogen with absorption maxima at 400.0nm.
The method is found to be linear in the concentration
range of 20 - 100µg/ml with regression co-efficient of
0.9998. No significant difference was found between
proposed and official method when one and two tailed
t-test were applied. Various reaction parameters
(reagent concentration and time for maximum colour
development, effect of temperature on reaction and
effect of pH of reagent) were optimized. The method was
validated and can be used successfully to assay
cefadroxil in bulk powder and its pharmaceutical dosage
forms i.e. tablets and capsules.
