Abstract: Modified tragacanth, a non-adhesive swellable form of tragacanth was prepared and evaluated as a disintegrant in tablets. Modified tragacanth exhibited a swelling index of 1,011% in water. Paracetamol and sulphamethoxazole tablets formulated employing modified tragacanth as disintegrant fulfilled all official requirements of tablets and disintegrated rapidly within 2 min. Wet i.e., intra and inter granular addition of modified tragacanth gave rapid and higher dissolution of the medicament from the tablets fulfilling the official dissolution rate test specification in each case and the dissolution rate was also higher than that from the corresponding commercial tablets. Modified tragacanth was found to be an excellent disintegrant in the formulation of conventional and dispersible tablets. |
