Abstract: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Unlike other forms of arthritis such as osteoarthritis, which is primarily due to wear and tear- RA is an autoimmune disease, which means that the immune system, which normally guards against infections and other diseases, actually attacks healthy tissues in the body. Most noticeably, RA affects a tissue in the joints, called the synovial membrane, which acts as a cushion for the joints as they move.
RA causes the synovial membrane to become inflamed, grow abnormally large, and over time, destroy other tissues in the joint. The abnormally large synovial membrane and accompanying joint destruction can cause pain and can result in deformities. As RA progresses, the pain, joint destruction, and loss of movement can take away the ability to live a normal life. In addition to its effect on joints, inflammation from RA can also affect other organs, such as the skin, eyes, mouth, lungs, kidneys, or heart.
