Biological Rhythms – Chrono Pharmacokinetics and Therapeutics

Amit Bhat and Dr.Shobha Rani.R.H*

Abstract: Time of the day affects the Biological rhythms and in turn the biological processes. Many gastro-intestinal, hepatic and renal processes vary with biological rhythms and this explains why Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Elimination of drugs(pharmacokinetics) change as a function of time of administration.

Chronotherapeutics , the application of chronobiological principles to the treatment of diseases is still in its infancy. The goals of this are to enhance the desired effects and reduce the side effects. The concept of drug treatment which was earlier "right drug for the right person" is now changing from "right dose for the right person" to " right time of dose for the right person ".

Knowledge of day-night and other predictable-in-time variations in the intensities of symptoms or risk of disease, coupled with evidence of circadian rhythms that affects the kinetics, effects, and safety of medications, constitute the rationale for a new pharmacologic approach to treatment.
