Understanding Cancer Cause, Control and Therapy from
Clinical Pharmacists Perspective

Abstract: Modern medicine is aging with breath taking advances in cancer care including cancer prevention, detection, therapy, research, rehabilitation and symptom management has seen a sea change over last decade. With the completion of human genome project, availability of high through put gene and tissue chips, 100th noble prize in medicine being given to three cancer researchers, lots of advances have percolated from bench to bed, setting newer standards for cancer care, comfort and cure. World wide there are about 6 million deaths in one year. In India, about 10 lakh new cancer cases are detected every year and about same of old plus new cancer persons die each year. The diagnosis of cancer once confirmed by the doctor does shock the patient beyond such a manner that one is taken aback. The patient and family both suffer differently and that adds to the total burden of cancer related illness. The relationship a doctor and oncology pharmacist carries with the cancer patient is that of friend, philosopher and guide telling how to add years to life and life to years.
