Perception of General Public about Complementary and Alternative Medicine: A Qualitative Research

Introduction: No clear definition of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is provided as it is considered to be residual and comprises of heterogeneous healing methods, therapies and products. However, an attempt has been made to define CAM by many. Ernst et al define CAM as “diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention which complements mainstream medicine by contributing to a common whole, by satisfying a demand not met by orthodoxy or by diversifying the conceptual frameworks of medicine1,2.” while, Vincent and Furnham termed CAM as an approach that “embraces a wide range of therapeutic practices and diagnostic systems that stands separate form, or in some cases opposed to, conventional scientifically based medicine3.
