Pharmacovigilance in India - Past, Present and Future

Introduction: The drug-related harm is currently one of the most important public health problems all over the world, although public and scientific attention has already focused on adverse drug reactions (ADRs) since the thalidomide disaster in the early 1960s1-3. ADRs are more common than expected and there can never be a guarantee that a medicine is completely safe. The current approach to post marketing surveillance mainly relies on spontaneous reporting4. This method is being utilized by many drug regulatory authorities worldwide. If ADRs that are not detected during clinical trials, then it is crucial that post-marketing pharmacovigilance of all medicines is comprehensive.
