Zinc Supplementation Beneficial In Diabetes Treatment

Introduction: Due to population growth, ageing, urbanization, unhealthy eating habits, increasing prevalence of obesity and reduced physical activity there is an exponential increase of diabetic and pre diabetic patients worldwide1. It is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity with an estimation of 346 million adults being affected in the year 2011. At present 80% of world’s diabetic population live in low and middle income countries2. There are several forms of alterations in metabolism of glucose which are collectively referred as Diabetes. The relation between Zinc, Insulin and diabetes is assumed to be complex. It is not always clear which comes first The effect of diabetes mellitus and hyperglycemia on zinc metabolism or the effects that follow alterations in Zinc homeostasis on carbohydrate metabolism.
