ZINC: An Overlooked Potential Micronutrient

Introduction: Zinc is an essential micronutrient element for normal animal and human health. It is been found that sufficient intake of Zinc is necessary to reduce childhood illness, growth retardation and cause of mortality and morbidity in children below poverty line1. Studies reveal that zinc supplementations decreases rate of occurrence of diarrhea and acute lower respiratory tract infections which are two important reasons of child mortality in 3rd world countries2. An estimation of 2 billion population is at risk of developing Zinc deficiency globally3. Adequate zinc intake shows to increase the linear growth and weight gain in stunted and malnourished young aged Indian children4. WHO recommends that zinc supplementations are necessary for the treatment of diarrheal infections and severe malnutrition5. As zinc is involved in numerous aspects of cellular metabolism, it is required for the catalytic activity of more than 100 enzymes and plays an important role in immune function, protein synthesis, wound healing, DNA synthesis and cell division6. During pregnancy, childhood and adolescence, Zinc is essential for normal growth and development7. To maintain steady state a daily intake of Zinc is required as body has no Zn storage system8.
