Abstract
The blockbusters, popular brands and expensive
prescription medicines are likely to be imitated for the
sole reasons for earning a quick buck by unscrupulous
traders and antisocial elements. With counterfeiters
also using state of art of counterfeiting methods and
technology, it is very difficult to identify
counterfeits from the genuine product. Due to lapse in
regulation and surveillances, counterfeited
pharmaceuticals of Indian origin are not only sold in
India but also in the international markets. Counterfeit
pharmaceuticals not only damage the economy of the
country but also cause irrevocable damage to the image
of the country. The menace of counterfeited
pharmaceuticals is growing at an alarming rate and are
pushed through distribution channels to retail chemists
in the market. There is need to redefine counterfeit
medicines and sanction strict punishments to individuals
and firms who are caught in the act of counterfeiting
pharmaceuticals. Counterfeited pharmaceuticals of Indian
origin appearing in the export market is a national
shame and is a major lapse in the governance of
pharmaceutical industry. Pharmaceuticals are considered
to be divine resources that are meant to cure diseases
and save human lives and reduce the suffering of ailing
patients.
