Rationale and Relevance of Complementary and Alternative Medicines in Combating Upper Respiratory Tract Infection

Abstract
A significant population of the world particularly belonging to tropical countries like India is susceptible to get infected by Influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) in early spring. This common problem may become fatal if not prevented or treated effectively. A great inclination is being observed towards Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) in combating URTI because of the significant reduction in the associated risk factors when compared with other drug therapies. An intelligent thought over the rationale and relevance of CAM as a drug therapy must be given while treating diseases. Home remedies and natural products are becoming treatment of choice for URTI due to obvious merits but certain measures with regard to the effectiveness and safety of such remedies have to be taken into consideration by health care providers before prescribing these to the patients.
