Subal C Basak

Introduction:

Escalating costs and affordability of medicines for both Governments and patients have become a global challenge. Generic medicines provide oppourtunities for savings in healthcare costs since they represent a cost effective alternative to expensive brand (innovator) medicines. The average price difference between brand and generic medicines could range from 20 to 90%.1 In the United States, generic medicines represented 47% of all prescriptions filled in 1999, 61% in 2006 and close to 70% by the end of 2008. The use of generic medicines saved the US healthcare system approximately 121 billion Dollars in 2008.2 Each year more than 310 million prescriptions are filled in Canada using generic medicines. This compares to approximately 210 million brand medicines filled annually in Canada. However, there are no such credible/scientific data available for comparison in India.
