Aspirin the First Synthetic Drug

Dr. R. S. Thakur

Introduction: Aspirin was the first synthetic drug produced in 1897, by Felix Hoffman, a German chemist of Bayer. While searching for something to relieve his father's arthritis, he studied Gerhardt's experiments and "rediscovered" acetylsalicylic acid as a very useful remedy and on August 10, 1897 synthesized a stable form of it. He made some of the formula and gave it to his father who was suffering from the pain of arthritis. Although Bayer was established in 1863, its first major product was acetylsalicylic acid in 1897. Felix Hoffman was able to modify salicylic acid to create acetylsalicylic acid, which was named aspirin and is being used for more than a century.
