Drug Legislation in India - How it All Started?

Introduction: There were many reports published in the press during first quarter of the 20th century on spurious, substandard and adulterated medicines. Several deaths were reported due to spurious and substandard drugs. Croton oil was used in the preparation of eye drops and chalk powder for manufacturing tablets and other solid oral dosage forms. Also there was no legislation regulating import of medicines, prescribed qualification to practice pharmacy profession and procedure for registration of pharmacist1.
