Herbal Acaricides - An Eco-Friendly Approach to Control Tick and Tick Borne Diseases

Introduction: Ticks have been recognized as an important ectoparasite and incriminated as voracious blood suckers, causing heavy blood losses leading to anaemia in livestock. Besides, tick infestations has been associated with low quality hide production1, development of secondary bacterial infections2, lowered productivity in terms of weight gain and milk yield3 as well as increased mortality. The tick and tick borne diseases (TTBDS) pose a serious impact on the individual and national economy of many developing countries including India4. Further, the fact has been amplified by a recent report of Swai5 who reported that in some countries wherein half of the earning from milk yield is spent on acaricidal treatment. Thus, the tick control programme has been recommended as a priority for developing countries including India6.
