Cold Precision: Innovative Thermal Inkjet Inks Designed to Address Cold Chain Pharmaceutical Challenges

Rechard Nemesi

Introduction: Recent advances in pharmaceutical product development, coupled with international serialization regulations, are having a profound effect on the local and global pharmaceutical supply chain. Biopharmaceuticals – medical products sourced from living systems – are being used in life-saving blood/plasma products and vaccines, as well as innovative treatments such as gene therapies, and recombinant protein therapies used to combat a variety of diseases. However, these pioneering, protein-based drugs are highly sensitive to fluctuating environmental conditions and need to be shipped and stored in colder temperatures – a practice known as “cold chain” distribution. With industry reports showing that 7 out of the top 10 biopharmaceutical products in 2014 were temperature sensitive, cold chain is becoming an increasingly regular practice. As more biopharmaceutical products emerge, IMARC research projects that the cold chain logistics market will grow from $8.5 billion to $13.5 billion by 2020.
