Globalization of Traditional Medicine - Validation and Quality Evaluation

Pulok K Mukherjee*, Shiv Bahadur, Amit Kar & Subhadip Banerjee

Introduction: The herbal medicines are being used from the existence of mankind enduring the management of human health. However, there is a lack of some systematic approach to assess their quality, safety and efficacy. In order to have a good coordination between the quality of raw materials in process materials and the finished products, several technologies are being developed for specific and sensitive quality control methods by using a combination of classical and modern method of analysis. Globalization of traditional medicine is necessary for the establishment of the evidence based health care, based on traditional medicine in consideration of its safety, efficacy, therapeutic and clinical evidences. New technology and science has developed many techniques and systems based on the core disciplines included as ethno-medicine, ethno-botany, ethno-pharmacology and medical anthropology to raise the traditional medicine for global existence. Analysis of metabolites in herbal medicine can be a precise and potentially valuable technology for identifying biomarkers. Implications of new emerging scientific techniques and approaches will provide the required testing platform for traditional medicine. These techniques have become versatile-standardization tool for the quality evaluation of herbs and offer a promising approach to biomarker-driven drug discovery and development.
