Establishment of Direct UV Analytical Method for Methyl Paraben Sodium

Introduction: Excipient such as methyl paraben sodium is used as preservative in pharmaceutical products. Studies indicate acid-base, iodometry titrations and HPLC methods for methyl paraben and propyl paraben and are official methods in Indian Pharmacopoeia, British Pharmacopoeia and United States Pharmacopoeia-National Formulary. A direct UV method for sodium salts is not observed. Even though they are called as excipients, definition of drugs as per Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 indicates them as drugs as they are components. It has been observed that methyl paraben sodium possess a Beer’s – Lambert’s Law limit in the range of 1 – 110 µg/ml, LOD and LOQ are 0.8259 and 2.5027 µg/ml respectively. The molar absorptivity and E (1 %, 1 cm) values of methyl paraben sodium are 1621 L mol-1 cm-1 and 93.2 respectively. The analytical method is found promising.
