Role of Starch in Tablet Formulations

Navdeep Singh Kathuria

Introduction: While discussing the excipients role in formulating the tablets, dose of active ingredients is not always sufficient to be formulated conveniently. Also aspects of handling during shipping and comfortable swallowing by patient become equally important while choosing tablet as dosage form. Excipients are generally used for tablet formulations as diluents, binders, disintegrants as well as lubricants.
Binders are the agents employed to impart cohesiveness to the granules. The addition of binders ensures the tablet remains intact after compression and improving the flow qualities by forming granules of required hardness and size. Disintegrants excel their action by breaking or rupturing themselves in aqueous environment resulting in increase of surface area and rapid release of drug substance.
