Dr. Prabhakara Rao. P.V., Dr.Kashyap, Dr. Neeharika. B, Dr. Harikishan. G

Introduction: Trans Oropharyngeal Spacer (TOPS) is a device designed to provide symptomatic relief to the patients with broncho-spasm and related conditions. It is made of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate copolymer which measures about 10 cm in length, 10 mm internal diameter throughout, with two critical angles. It has an universal adaptor in the front for various inhalers. Aim of the study:1. Is to use TOPS along with the MDI and compare efficacy of aerosol delivery with the external spacer andMDI. 2. Subjectively assess the drug delivery (salbutamol aerosol) using a questionaire by the subjects. Materials : 1. TOPS, 2.External spacer, 3. Mini wright peak flow meter,(PEFR)4. Salbutamol MDI. Method: For this study subjects attending the chest clinic with broncho-spasm were assessed using a protocol. The objective change in the peak flow with the diurnal variation wasassessed before and after the aerosol delivery using MDI with TOPS and external spacer. Results: extrapolated graphically showshift to right, after the usage of MDI with the TOPS. Conclusion: Aerosol delivery is more effective with MDI and TOPS, compared to MDI with external spacer. Drug deposition was measured using 99mTc Isotope scan.
