Fixed Oils and Injectables

Introduction: In general, aqueous vehicles (including obviously water of appropriate grade) are used for dissolving and carrying the drugs in injectable products. Plant derived fixed oils are employed in injectable preparations to dissolve drugs with poor aqueous solubility, susceptibility to hydrolysis (poor stability in formulations), or the potential for causing irritations (when injected in body) in aqueous vehicles; and to provide a mechanism for sustained release of drug over a long period of time (depot systems). In total parenteral nutrition (TPN) products, fixed oils serve as source of nutrition and as carriers for the oil soluble vitamins.
