Strategies For Needle Free Insulin Therapy: A Review

Introduction: Insulin though discovered in the 1920’s in Toronto, still remains a holy grail for scientists across the world with scientists trying to formulate a delivery for insulin, which is a painless yet effective form of delivery. The options for delivering insulin are endless however due to the challenges related to the stability of Insulin and the cost of needle free devices still remains an unfulfilled dream for the formulator. Around the world diabetics are administered insulin via injectable insulin: pens, injectors or pumps. The diabetes population around the globe continues to increase. There is a great unmet need for devices/formulations that can provide painless delivery of insulin. Even though there are a number of oral medications or drugs that are effective in Type II diabetes, insulin remains the last word in treatment of both Type I and Type II diabetes. The horizon is yet full of new ideas which are coming to the fore which offer hope for the delivery of insulin in an effortless manner. This article is an attempt to collate this information and present the pros and cons of the devices in a concise manner.
