Pharmacovigilance A Review

Introduction: The start of the pharmacovigilance program across the world can be traced from the infamous Thalidomide disaster of 1962 when WHO program for International Drug Monitoring was set up in 19683. This was followed by development of spontaneous adverse event reporting system in many countries. Even after so many years a report by European Parliament in the year 2008 mentioned that 3-10% of all hospital admissions were due to Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and also ADRs were the 5th most common cause of hospital death4.
