Stability Indicating HPLC Method for the Estimation of Zolmitriptan

Introduction: Zolmitriptan, (4S)-4-[[3-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-1H-indol-5-yl] methyl]-2-oxazolidinone is a novel serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor agonist that has shown, in an extensive clinical trial program, to be highly effective in the acute oral treatment of migraine with or without aura. Various methods have been reported in the literature for the analysis of Zolmitriptan including fluorimetry, HPLC,RP-HPLC/electro spray ionization mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography/electro spray tandem mass spectrometry3. However, several analytical HPLC methods were reported in literature for the quantitative determination of Zolmitriptan and its metabolites in human plasma and other biological fluids. Very few achiral and chiral HPLC methods were reported for the detection and quantification of the related impurities and degradation products in the drug substance Zolmitriptan4,5.
