Pharmacovigilance: Various Aspects, Challenges and Role of Different Partners and Pharmacists

Introduction: According to World Health Organization (WHO), Pharmacovigilance is defined as “the science and activities relating to detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug related problem”1. It is well known that drug therapy is associated with unintended and unwanted effects, which could lead to serious health related issues. This was magnified during 1960’s when thalidomide was given to pregnant women for morning sickness. The pregnant women who were given thalidomide gave birth to babies suffering from malformations (phocomelia). WHO, in response to thalidomide tragedy, established programmed for international drug monitoring. As more and more drugs are marketed, the need for pharmacovigilance is felt more than in the past.
