Stability Indicating HPTLC Method for Estimation of Flupirtine Maleate in Pharmaceutical Preparations

Rajendra B Kakde & Rahul Dahale

Introduction: Flupirtine maleate [2-amino-3-carbethoxyamino-6-(7- fluorobenzylamino) pyridine maleate] (Carter-Wallace Labs., Cranbury, NJ, U.S.A.), is an amino pyridine that functions as a centrally acting non-opioid analgesic with a long duration of action and apparently a low addiction and tolerance liability. Its activity appears not to be affected significantly by Naloxone and it may therefore lack opiate activity. It is evaluated by the Epilepsy Branch of the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke (NINCDS) at the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health as an anti-epileptic agent1.Two methods for the determination of flupirtine have been reported in literature including, quantitation of flupirtine and its active acetylated metabolite by Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid chromatography using Fluorometric detection2 and Simultaneous determination of flupirtine and its major active metabolite in human plasma by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry3.
