Alternative to Animal Experimentation: India's Stand Point

Introduction: Laboratory animals are used in scientific research for the discovery and development of drugs, vaccines and medical devices, for the toxicity testing of drugs, chemicals and consumer products, and also in education and training. Animal models play crucial roles in the biomedical research as the in vivo models are especially important for proof-of-principle experiments and in establishing the preclinical safety and efficacy data required for progressing to human clinical trials. Around the world animal experimentations are regulated by laws and guidelines to control the number animals used, and the degree of pain and suffering. The provisions of these animal protection laws though vary greatly from county to country with the basic aim to prevent cruelty to wards animals, controls and supervise experiments.
