Antispasmodic Activity of Memecylon Umbellatum Roots – An In Vitro Study

Abstract
The present investigation is an attempt to provide the pharmacological basis for the traditional use of the Memecylon umbellatum roots. The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the ethanol extract of M. umbellatum roots against the acetylcholine induced contraction on isolated rat ileum. The findings suggest that the ethanol extract of M. umbellatum roots showed inhibition of the acetylcholine induced contraction in a concentration dependent manner evident for its folklore use.
