Till the 60's medicines were imported in the country and the pharma industry was dominated by foreign companies. In the wake of this scenario, was the initiative by a small group of Indian visionary entrepreneurs for forming the Indian Drug Manufacturers’ Association (IDMA) in Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, in 1961. Now, 50 years. Down the road, the complexion of the industry is distinctly Indian, and India has acquired a dominant position in the pharmaceutical sector, with Maharashtra leading the way as the torch-bearer of Indian Pharmaceutical industry. From depending on importers of finished formulations from the West, india has emerged as a leading exporter of APIs as well as formulations to developed nations in competition with the might of MNCs. Conceived with the aim of promoting the cause of the indigenous industry and to serve the healthcare needs of our people, lDMA is today, acknowledged as the Voice of the National Sector. India today, can claim the proud achievement of providing affordable quality medicines not only to our people, but also to people all over the world.
IDMA has around 850 members, made up of large, medium and small national manufacturers spread across the length and breadth of the country. IDMA keeps Members and industry updated on all issues through our weekly communication medium IDMA Bulletin (in its 42nd year of publication), regular emails and our dedicated Website Other publications include the monthly scientific and research journal Indian Drugs (in its 48th year) and Annual Publication (in its 49th year) and other technical monographs and publications.
