Applications of Thiolated Chitosans in Drug Delivery

Medikonduri Usha Sree, Lewis Shaila & Anantha Naik N

Introduction
Chitosan is a biodegradable and biocompatible polysaccharide of β (1,4)-linked D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine obtained by deacetylation of chitin1. It is a weak base with a pKa value of the D-glucosamine residue of about 6.2-7.0 and, therefore, is insoluble at neutral and alkaline pH values2. In acidic medium, the primary amine groups of the polymer are protonated resulting in a soluble, positively charged polysaccharide that has a high charge density. These primary amino groups are responsible for chitosan to exhibit various properties3.
