Formulation and Evaluation of NIACIN Extended Release Matrix Tablets

Introduction: Niacin (nicotinic acid, also known as 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid, chemical formula C6H5NO2) is a water-soluble B complex vitamin that occurs in various animal and plant tissues. known to have benefits associated with the treatment of hypercholesterolemia because it increase levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and lowers levels of total serum cholesterol, low density lipoproteins(LDL) and triglycerides. 60-70% of nicotinic acid is rapidly absorbed from stomach and intestine. The blood half-life of Niacin is 5.3hrs and it is absorbed throughout the GIT. It has pellagra-curative, vasodilation, and anti-hyperlipidemic properties. Niacin is used to treat mixed dyslipidemia, type IV and V hyperlipidemia1-3.
