Manthan D Janodia

Introduction: The origin of Ayurveda dates back to pre-vedic period. References on health and diseases can be found in ancient texts like Rigveda and Atharvaveda, which dates back to 5000 BC, approximately 7000 years. The word Ayurveda is composed of two words “Ayur” and “Veda” which implies “Science” of “Life” or “Way of Life”. Ayurveda deals with both curative and preventive aspects of diseases and life1. The conceptual framework of Ayurveda has been consistent throughout the ages. The principles of Ayurveda were presumably organized in 1500 BC. Atharvaveda, one of the four Vedas, has 114 hymns dealing with formulations to treat different diseases2 Sushruta Samhita and Charaka Samhita (Samhita means treatise) deals with Medicine and Surgery respectively. Charaka Samhita has chapters dealing with various aspects of medicine and mentions about 600 drugs of plant, mineral and animal origin. Sushruta Samhita deals with fundamental principles of surgery and has description of more than 100 kinds of surgical instruments such as scalpels, scissors, forceps, spatula etc. with their use2.
