Abstract: The post-independent era of our country has witnessed phenomenal growth in the field of higher education. As compared to 23 universities at the time of independence, today we have around 380 universities of all types put together with a network of more than 18,000 degree colleges catering to the educational needs of about 11 million students. Around 6% of the total enrollment of the students is for health-oriented professional courses. The Institutions of Health Sciences including pharmacy, constitute approximately 7% of the total number of affiliated and constituent colleges in the country. During past two decades, the expansion of professional education has occurred to the extent of 90 per cent through the private sector. As compared to 3 institutions imparting B.Pharm course at the time of independence, today we have 694 AICTE approved institutions of pharmacy with a total intake of 39,301 students, imparting 4-year Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) course. The state-wise break-up of the pharmacy institutions during the academic year 2007-08 is given below.
