This conference was organized by PERHIPBA (The Indonesian Association of Natural Drug Researchers), The Association of Natural Drug Researchers and the International Society of Ethnopharmacology. The organizers of this conference mainly intended to present positive results for the research and development of traditional medicine and medicinal plants in the future, by exchanging knowledge and experiences between the participants of the conference through communication, discussions and working together.
Back Ground of the Conference
Since last decades of the 20th century, there have been many negative effects to human health caused by using synthetic substances such as medicines, foods, beverage preservatives and colouring substances, all of which has resulted in the popular 'Back to the Nature Movement'. This endorsed R&D in traditional medicines and medicinal plants for herbal medicines as an alternative medicinal field.
The use of traditional medicine and medicinal plants has expanded globally. It has gained extensive popularity and now has become an imperative part of human health care. Traditional medicines have been used by the Indonesian people since many centuries. As an archipelago country of more than 1,30,000 tropical islands spread around the equator with a very fantastic diversity of plants, approximately 40,000 kinds of plant species, inhibited by more than 300 ethnic groups, Indonesia has many problems to be studied in the R&D of Indonesian traditional and medicinal plants. |
