THE PHARMA REVIEW (NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2012)

Beginning of The End of The Blockbuster Era

SwapnaSatheendran2, Vaishnavi Naik1 & Anantha Naik Nagappa1

Introduction:

The health care practice is changing from product centered to patient centered worldwide. The fashion of one-cap fits all in case of drugs is changing to individualization of therapy. Due to increased consumer awareness, the regulators are demanding exclusive safety and efficacy data. The introduction of new drug molecule and development it into a blockbuster seems to be a bygone era. The development of a new drug molecule has become highly expensive on one hand and the consumer activisms along with strong legal support are making the pharmaceutical industry to pay a heavy compensation, which can lead to bankruptcy for an Industry. The wellness, along with quality of life and cost effective treatments are replacing the mantra of” A pill for every ill” phenomenon. The new style of team approach of health care is replacing the doctor dominated care to evidence based medicine. The availability of Systematic reviews, Meta analysis and RCT data is replacing the irrational use of medicine. This will put a break to unethical prescribing of medicines limiting the financial gains to the Industry. Hence it is unlikely to see a blockbuster drug in future. It is likely that Industry may change its products with services conducive to patient safety.
