Fast Dissolving Tablets : A Novel Dosage Form

Yash Paul1, Manoj Kumar1 & Bhupinder Singh2

Introduction:

Tablets are usually circular solid cylinders, the end surfaces of which are flat or convex and the edges of which may be beveled. They may have lines or break-marks and may bear a symbol or other markings. Tablets may be coated1.Tablet is the most popular among all dosage forms existing today because of its convenience of self administration, compactness and easy handling, however, hand tremors, dysphasia in case of geriatric patients, the underdeveloped muscular and nervous systems in young individuals and in case of uncooperative patients, the problem of swallowing is common phenomenon which leads to poor patient compliance2. Therefore, for the past one decade, there has been an enhanced demand for more patient friendly and compliant dosage forms. As a result the demand for developing new technologies has been increasing enormously. Since development cost of a new drug molecule is very high, efforts are now being made by pharmaceutical companies to focus on the development of new drug dosage forms for existing drugs with improved safety and efficacy together with reduced dosing frequency, and the production of more cost - effective dosage forms. One such approach is the development of fast dissolving tablets. Fast dissolving tablets are uncoated or film - coated tablets intended to be dispersed in water before administration giving a homogeneous dispersion1. Fast dissolving tablets are particularly useful for pediatric patients in order to producing quick response and ease of administration. Antiretroviral drugs are medications intended for the treatment of infection caused by retroviruses, primarily HIV infection.
