Good Pharmacy Practice A Way to Promote Rational Use of Medicines

Dr. Guru Prasad Mohanta

Introduction: Medicines are part of our lives. They not only save lives and promote health, but prevent epidemics and diseases too. Uninterrupted availability of essential medicines in the health system facilities is important to provide better healthcare to the population besides improving the credibility of the system itself. Public looses faith in the system when medicines are not available and the health professionals get demoralised. The World Medicine Situation of World Health Organization (WHO) (2004) writes that in the whole world the lack of access to medicines is particularly concentrated in Africa and India. Sri Lanka has, of course, better access to essential medicines. Although much progress has been made moving forward on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), one of the biggest gaps identified in the progress is achieving access to essential medicines. United Nations (UN) report (2009) says that the access to essential medicines in many developing countries is still far from adequate.
