Electronic Health Record System in India: Implications for Health Technology Assessment (HTA), Status and Challenges

Abstract: Electronic health record (EHR) system offers various advantages over traditional paper-written health records. In addition to providing a permanent record of the result of meticulous examination by the clinician, the EHR can generate a large pool of analysable real world data (contrasting to the electronic CRF which generates clinical trial data), which can be used to process health technology assessment of any health intervention in question. This can lead to an efficient and rapid assessment of the overall health benefits of an intervention, enabling the policy makers to come to quick and reliable decisions. Though accepted in the Western world, there are some significant roadblocks in achieving widespread acceptance of EHR system in India. We discuss these aspects and conclude with the practical considerations behind implementing EHR system in India
