Community Pharmacy Practices, not Regulations and Policies, Help Increase Access to Medicines

Subal C Basak

Introduction: A community pharmacy, often referred to retail pharmacy or retail drug outlet, is the place where medicines are stored and dispensed, supplied or sold. The general population in India usually calls community pharmacies as “medical stores”. Pharmacists working in the community practice setting are community pharmacists. They are either the owners of community pharmacies (referred to private pharmacies) or employed in the private or chain-store pharmacies. A large majority of private pharmacies are owned by non-pharmacists, while chain-store pharmacies are dominated by organized sector and are limited to urban areas. Community pharmacists are often called “drug retailers” or “drug dispensers”.
