Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine 2015-Significance for Indian Efforts in Drug Discovery and Development from Traditional Knowledge

Dr. M. D. Nair

Introduction: The award of this year’s Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine to the Chinese Scientist, Youyou Tu for her discovery of Artemesinin for treatment of malaria based on traditional Chinese knowledge on the usefulness of the plant Artemesia annua for fever is highly significant, since Indian efforts to discover and develop new drugs based on Indian Traditional knowledge and systems of medicine has so far had limited success. The few drugs developed from traditional knowledge of their use in Indian systems of Medicine such as Ayurveda, including Reserpine from Rauwolfia serpentina as an anti-hypertensive and Vinca alkaloids from plants of the Vinca family for a variety of cancers were discovered and developed by research based companies outside India and none of them got any major international recognition for their origin from Traditional Knowledge and Indian systems of Mecinine, let alone the Nobel prize. The fact that a Natural product researcher working in a Traditional Chinese Medicine Institution could win the Nobel prize for her discovery of Artemesinin is a recognition that traditional sytems have much to offer for the discovery of new therapeutic agents for some of the diseases for which modern medicine has no answer.
