Indian Healthcare Model - Good For First World, Not Good Enough For Third World

Introduction: There is no denying the fact that the health of a country’s population is the single and most important factor responsible for development and growth of a nation state and all countries of the world are striving to ensure that efforts at achieving adequate health for their people are not compromised. However, successful outcomes from such efforts will be assured only if there is political will at the highest level and there are appropriate policies, commitments and resources. While every country has its own strategies and action programmes for ensuring an equitable system, the case of some of the developed countries notably U.S. is indicative of the current malaise. India has since independence developed its own model, which , while far from being perfect or even acceptable, offers some elements which can be adopted by many other countries including the developed ones burdened with high costs of healthcare.
