Game Set for Advantage India

Abstract: India turned a new leaf on January 1, 2005, when the product patent regime came in to force as per the WTO agreement. Much has been written about the opportunities and challenges it brings for Indian pharmaceutical market. The domestic industry in India has transformed itself from the reverse engineering led industry focused on the domestic market to a research driven, export oriented industry with a global presence. This article tries to explore the advantage India to the world and to Indians as well.

What are the key factors which make India such an exciting business opportunity to global pharmaceutical industry? It's a key question which has been raised on many a world forums. The answer to this question is not as simple as the question might seem to be. The recent overseas acquisitions by Indian companies like Ranbaxy, Wockhrdt, Zydus-Cadila and Glenmark in Europe & Latin America; more than 100 Drug Master Files (DMFs), and Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs) has further fueled this interest.
