Antioxidant Effect of Phyllanthus Urinaria in Liver and Kidney of Alloxan

Induced Diabetic Rats - Munish Garg, V J Dhar, A N Kalia

Abstract: Free radicals attack in diabetes mellitus leads to several complications thus an effective antidiabetic agent should necessarily be able to control the associated problems of diabetes. Oral administration of Phyllanthus urinaria extracts (500mg/kg) given to alloxan-induced diabetic rats have remarkably improved the altered levels of lipid peroxidation product (TBARS), catalase and superoxide dismutase in liver and kidney. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts has shown maximum activity followed by pet ether extract against tolbutamide (200mg/kg). This study confirms the antioxidant potential of P. urinaria and encourages the use of plant in diabetes mellitus.
