Abstract: Solid dispersions of Piroxicam in five superdisintegrants namely Primojel, microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, primojel, pregelatinized starch, croscarmellose sodium and with water soluble carriers Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone and Polyethylene glycol were prepared and investigated by invitro method with an objective of enhancing the dissolution rate of Piroxicam. Solid dispersions of Piroxicam in superdisintegrants gave a marked enhancement in its dissolutions rate and dissolution efficiency. The order of increasing dissolution rate observed with various superdisintegrants was Croscarmellose sodium > Pregelatinized Starch > Primojel > Crospovidone > Microcrystalline Cellulose. Croscarmellose sodium alone provided 9.69 fold increase where as water soluble carriers 1.96 and 1.70 fold increase in the dissolution rate with Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone and polyethylene glycol respectively. Solid dispersion in superdisintegrants could be used as an effective and efficient technique for enhancing the dissolution rate of Piroxicam a poorly soluble drug.
